Renowned Māori Artist Seeks Formal Apology From Kāpiti News After MisgenderingWellington, 4 August 2026Renowned multidisciplinary Indigenous artist Taupuruariki (Ariki) Whakataka Brightwell is seeking a formal public apology from Kāpiti News after the newspaper misgendered her.
After the issue was raised, Kāpiti News advised that it would correct the online version of the article.
However, the print edition containing the misgendering remains in circulation throughout the Kāpiti Coast.
According to Brightwell, Christie declined to issue a public apology, and she has since lodged formal complaints with both the Human Rights Commission and the New Zealand Media Council.
We remain hopeful that this can still be resolved constructively through a sincere public apology.”
