Three Houston mothers have filed a lawsuit seeking to block a Texas law that mandates displays of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms.
Unlike previous legal challenges that relied on the First Amendment's separation of church and state under federal law, the current action bases its arguments directly on Texas law, as reported by The Texas Tribune.
"I'm hopeful that we have this avenue of this state law to show this is not what freedom of religion looks like in Texas."
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has consistently defended the statute, maintaining that the Ten Commandments represent a foundational element of American history and legal tradition.
The filing comes less than two months after the Texas Board of Education voted to approve a new curriculum that incorporates biblical teachings into public school instruction.
