South Western Railway (SWR) is targeting fare dodgers who deliberately buy a ticket covering only part of their journey, a practice known as short-faring or short-ticketing. The scam relies on the misuse of electronic tickets, particularly those covering the four-minute journey between Vauxhall and London Waterloo. When passengers arrive at Waterloo with an unscanned electronic ticket from Vauxhall, it indicates they boarded the train earlier without purchasing the correct fare. Fare dodgers must pay a £100 penalty fare, reduced by half if paid within 21 days, and purchase a valid ticket for their journey. Mr Winnie said: "Every fare avoided is money that can’t be reinvested into improving the railway and delivering the best possible service.
