Hartwood House in Lyndhurst developed The Books on Grandpa’s Shelf – Understanding Dementia, following specialist training undertaken by its Dementia Coaches. The idea emerged after the home’s summer fayre, where staff noticed some visiting children were unsure how to interact with residents living with dementia. A spokesperson for Hartwood House said: "Dementia doesn't just affect the person living with the condition—it affects families, friends and communities. The project aims to increase children’s understanding of dementia, reduce fear during interactions with people living with dementia, and encourage meaningful intergenerational relationships. Hartwood House is now distributing copies of the book to schools, hospitals, Scout and Guide groups, and other community organisations.
