All of this context is necessary to explain why Rodrigo’s third record, “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love,” is so difficult to form an opinion on.
First, it’s important to look at Rodrigo’s biggest influences for “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.”
But the fact that these similarities come from songs that are genre-adjacent to Rodrigo’s music makes her songs feel derivative and formulaic.
Though I don’t love her music, Olivia Rodrigo remains one of my favorite modern musicians.
However long we have to wait for the next Olivia Rodrigo album, I think it will live up to our expectations (pun intended).
