SANTA FE, N.M. – New Mexico’s attorney general said federal officials wrongly denied records in a fentanyl case tied to claims the DEA allowed hundreds of thousands of pills to enter the state on purpose. The New Mexico Department of Justice said it asked for Drug Enforcement Administration records tied to fentanyl investigations in New Mexico between 2022 and 2025. On Aug. 3, the New Mexico Department of Justice said federal officials denied its request for the records. Attorney General Raul Torrez said the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) denial was “legally flawed.” Torrez set an Aug. 17 deadline for the records as the state investigation continues.
