Bluetongue cases accelerate as farmers urged to strengthen disease defences
['Glen Barclay']
The Scottish Farmer | News
The latest figures from Defra, covering the period to July 31, show 81 confirmed cases in England and three in Wales.
By 11 August last year, England had recorded just 12 cases of BTV‑3.
Since the introduction of the all‑Wales restricted zone in November 2025, livestock have been able to move freely between England and Wales without additional bluetongue movement restrictions.
In cattle, the disease can also reduce milk production, while severe cases may result in abortions, birth defects or death.
Farmers can also access the latest guidance, disease updates and vaccination information through GOV.UK and the Bluetongue Virus Hub.
