Wildfires tearing through the Spokane area in eastern Washington have forced roughly 60,000 people to evacuate and destroyed at least 600 homes and businesses, authorities said Sunday.
The fires, among dozens burning across the western United States, have strained firefighting resources at the federal, state and local level.
CNN reported the Autumn Lane Fire had "relatively decent control" on its perimeter even as it remained active.
Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown called the fires "the worst natural disaster our region has faced."
US Sen. Maria Cantwell, speaking at a Sunday news conference with federal, state and local officials, said, "We are not out of danger."
