A recent study found that bots are 2.5 times more effective than human scammers in getting people to trust them, suggesting that certain operations are fully automatable. After telling the participants that one partner was an LLM, 20 of 22 participants correctly identified the AI partner, but only in hindsight. One potential limit for the study was that the humans were recruited not from professional scammers but regular people who got six hours of scammers' training. The results call to mind a study from payment security platform Trustmi that found people were poor at detecting AI in payment fraud. Only 22% of the survey respondents flagged unusual urgency and 16% an unexpected invoice, which are both major indicators of modern payment fraud.
