Stewart's performance carries a real weariness, and you can feel decades of a man's life pressing down on every scene. If someone asked me to watch just one Anthony Mann Western, this would almost certainly be my recommendation. Stewart's performance is genius because he lets Stoddard's idealism curdle, slowly and believably, into something more compromised by the movie's final act.
