The Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has approached the Supreme Court on August 3, 2026, seeking a directive for Karnataka to comply with a July 30 decision by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). Tamil Nadu has argued that Karnataka has repeatedly failed to meet previous tribunal orders for water allocation, despite having sufficient storage capacity. Tamil Nadu has requested the court to ensure compliance with CWMA directives and monitor water flows from Karnataka’s reservoirs every 10 days. The conflict over Cauvery water allocation remains unresolved despite interventions by various committees and authorities. Tamil Nadu contends that Karnataka’s non-compliance has worsened the water crisis, particularly for farmers in the basin during the current irrigation year.
