VALLEY CITY, N.D. — The Barnes County Sheriff's Office is asking people to turn off crash detection on their phones after an increase in false alerts this summer. Sheriff Randy McClaflin says some 911 calls have been triggered by phones being left on top of cars or other unintentional actions. ADVERTISEMENTThe calls have caused volunteer fire departments, sheriffs and ambulances to respond to road accidents that never took place. McClaflin says if a dispatcher calls about a possible false crash detection, you should answer the phone and explain what happened. McClaflin says construction work or operating heavy machinery can also trigger a false crash detection.
