The member of Little Sisters of St. Francis (LSOSF) however cautioned that the increasing collection and sharing of personal information online has also heightened concerns about privacy and data protection. She observed that although Africa does not yet have a single continent-wide data protection framework comparable to Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), many countries have enacted national legislation to safeguard personal information. These include Kenya's Data Protection Act of 2019, Nigeria's Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023, South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), Uganda's Data Protection and Privacy Act, Zambia's Data Protection Act, and Tanzania's Personal Data Protection Act. Sr. Muturi noted that despite differences in national legislation, the fundamental principles governing data protection remain consistent. Drawing from Church teaching, Sr. Muturi emphasized that safeguarding personal information is both a legal obligation and a moral responsibility.
