Last year, Cape Town had climbed to sixth place in the INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard, with motorists spending close to 100 hours a year sitting in traffic. The City argues that decades of development have favoured private vehicle ownership, while investment in public transport has struggled to keep pace. The publication also notes that Cape Town is examining international examples where transport systems successfully encourage shared mobility rather than individual car use. Another proposal involves reviewing parking policies in the Cape Town CBD. Workers would then have the option of using that money for public transport, carpooling, cycling or walking, or keeping the balance if they choose lower-cost alternatives.
