A South Western Railway train (Image: SWR)SWR estimates up to 95 per cent of barcode tickets bought for travel between Vauxhall and London Waterloo are used fraudulently. SWR and Network Rail Wessex say 172 million journeys are made each year, including an estimated 6.5 million without a valid ticket. SWR says fare dodging costs it about £40 million a year, despite a 67 per cent fall since 2017 after targeted enforcement. Matthew Winnie, chief customer and commercial officer at SWR and Network Rail Wessex, said: "The overwhelming majority of our customers pay the correct fare. Passengers caught short-faring face a £100 penalty fare, cut to £50 if paid within 21 days, plus a single ticket for their journey.
