“And you know why you love at all”: The White Stripes’ greatest closing verseIt would be no understatement to say that The White Stripes channelled a force that was unrivalled in intensity and brilliance. One could go on about how The White Stripes may very well be one of the greatest bands that rock music has ever heard, not to mention the sheer triumph in the fact that there were only two of them making such all-encompassing noise. What is less discussed, unfortunately, is the genius of Jack White’s songwriting. Diving into The White Stripes’ songs, however, one of the closing verses lingers beyond every listen, poignantly written with a true storyteller’s pen. The closing verse is a jolt of reality, as if each instrumental break between verses brings us closer to the realisation that this obsession has reached a peak.
