A spokesman for Herefordshire Council said: "Herefordshire Council is investing £37 million in roads, footpaths and public spaces during 2026/27, including more than £12 million for road resurfacing, highways improvements and preventative maintenance across the county. "The number of pothole reports received each year can vary and reflects a range of factors, including weather conditions and how residents report issues. "Following one of the region’s wettest winters on record, prolonged rainfall accelerated the deterioration of road surfaces, leading to more defects being reported." Despite the increase in pothole reports, spending on repairs actually fell from £4,061,540 in 2024/25 to £3,441,112 in 2025/26. The council also revealed that it paid out more than £17,000 in compensation for vehicle damage related to poor road conditions during 2025/26.
