£5.9bn of funding was announced for the town’s biggest employer BAE systems and new Prime Minister Andy Burnham came to visit. BAE Systems employ around 13,500 people at the Barrow site, with approximately 1,800 additional roles having been created over the past three years. The aim is for these to build on the apprenticeship models already established by BAE Systems in Barrow but how many will go to local residents? In fairness to the new PM, he recognised the region’s poor transport links when visiting the BAE Systems site in Barrow. Team Barrow, Mr Burnham and BAE Systems would say that it is different this time with clear investment in jobs, transport and infrastructure.
