Campaigners who have repeatedly protested in Inverness have praised the decision to block Scotland’s controversial Guga hunt. NatureScot, which is headquartered in Inverness, has refused an application for this year’s Guga hunt licence - which would have seen up to 2000 Gannet chicks killed on the remote island of Sula Sgeir. The Guga hunt is the UK’s last remaining seabird hunt, allowed by an exemption in section 16 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Protect the Wild is calling on the Scottish Parliament to amend the legislation to remove that exemption permanently. A Scottish Parliament petition to abolish the Guga hunt has attracted more than 100,000 signatures, making it one of the most signed petitions in the Parliament's history.
