Nearly all of the estimated 60,000 people who swam around the sea border to reach the peninsula have been returned to Moroccan soil, most having left voluntarily by Saturday. But the repercussions of the episode continue to be felt within Spain and the European Union, even as its causes remain uncertain and even mysterious. Ceuta sits on a tiny peninsula, 10 kilometers long and with a population of some 84,000. Eighty people reportedly died in the attempt to reach Spanish territory. Many of those who made it to Ceuta explained their desperate effort by pointing to the lack of opportunities back home.
