Spindly, crisp branches of destroyed trees line the pathways deeper in the Wick. Behind the metal fence which separates the Wick from the old military shooting range, dark patches of grass stretch to the far tree line. From the view atop the hill with the flagpole, it is easy to see the devastation. Smoke was visible for miles while Mersea Road and Abbots Road were closed to traffic. A second blaze broke out at the Wick on Sunday, sending smoke over nearby homes and prompting fresh warnings for residents.
