As New Zealand’s political parties trade increasingly personal attacks ahead of the 2026 General Election, broadcaster and commentator Matthew Tukaki says voters remain focused on a much simpler question: how they are going to pay the bills.
“The political theatre might generate headlines, but it doesn’t put food on the table,” he said.
Tukaki also highlighted the rising unemployment rate, saying it is becoming one of the country’s most pressing challenges.
He said voters will ultimately judge political parties not by their rhetoric, but by the credibility of their policies and their ability to improve the lives of ordinary New Zealanders.
