Andy Burnham on Monday night gave the green light for thousands of killers, thugs and paedophiles to get out of jail early. The Prime Minister paused the controversial plans last month after a public outcry over the proposed release of two of the killers of PC Andrew Harper. Less serious offenders, who would normally have served half of their sentence, will be released after only a third of their jail time. The changes announced by Mr Burnham are expected to cut the number of serious offenders earmarked for early release by around 1,000 to 5,000. But thefailure to halt the early release of PC Harper's killers is likely to raise questions about his judgment.
