Burien Severe Weather Shelter seeks donations during heat and smoke

The Burien Severe Weather Shelter will keep its day center open extra hours this week because of heat and wildfire smoke, according to shelter organizers.
In addition to regular hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, the center is planning to open from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6.
The extended hours offer a place for people in Burien and nearby South King County communities to get indoors during unhealthy weather conditions.
Donations SoughtThe shelter is seeking donations of:Lunch suppliesCold treatsClothing and hygiene itemsRequested food items include:Ham and turkey lunch meatSliced cheddar, provolone or havarti style cheesesLarge wide pan breadFruit salad fruitsIce cream bars, ice cream sandwiches, party size tubs of vanilla ice cream, Popsicles or Otter PopsIndividual chip bagsOrganizers said the center has enough condiments.
Other requested items include:Disposable razorsMen’s boxer briefs in sizes small, medium, large and extra largeWhite or black tube and crew socksDonations may be dropped off whenever the center is open at the lower level door on the southeast corner of Highline United Methodist Church at 13015 First Ave South:
