It’s that person who makes you think… and think… and think some more. To build a character that a reader will actively seek out, you must key in on the micro-details like the character’s dialogue and voice. Ultimately, it often comes down to a simple, human question: Is this character somebody I would want to be friends with? To write a book worthy of someone’s precious time, I think you must do more than write sweeping prose and dream up impossible plot twists. When you do the hard work of building multi-dimensional characters from the inside out, the theme of belonging takes care of itself.
