August 3, 2026By Canadian PlasticsThe newest tariffs are to counter discriminatory measures, according to Perc Pineda of the Plastics Industry Association.
The Trump Administration’s announced decision to impose an additional 50 per cent tariff on certain Canadian plastics and plastic products is a “targeted response to Canada’s automotive trade measures,” according to a new analysis from the U.S.-based Plastics Industry Association.
This includes approximately 20 HTS codes covering plastic materials and plastic products.
Pineda’s report noted that the U.S. has an opportunity to strengthen its North American plastics trade position.
The U.S. continues to import more plastics from Canada than it exports, Pineda wrote, and also exports more to Mexico than it imports.
