Among these is Direct Pipe®, a one-pass trenchless installation method that combines horizontal directional drilling (HDD) with steerable microtunnel techniques. Direct Pipe is used to install prefabricated liquid, gas, or product pipe or casing. Michels completed its first Direct Pipe installation in 2013 for a 42-inch oil pipeline spanning 342m under a Canadian river. Michels remains at the forefront of Direct Pipe technique with the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project. Offshore wind developments are continuing along coastlines, suggesting that landfalls with similar complexities as CVOW’s will become more common.
