The “unbeatable” 1974 masterpiece Mel Brooks called “as great as any movie ever made”It’s impossible to make a great movie without at least a couple of great performances, just like it’s easy for one terrible performance to tank an entire film. At best, an ensemble firing on all cylinders produces seminal results, and there’s one that Mel Brooks will stand up against anything that’s ever been made. “Some Like It Hot has a terrific, complicated, wonderful story, and amazingly good performances by Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe,” the EGOT-winning veteran prefaced. More than that, Brooks suggested that “the performances in Blazing Saddles are as great as any performance in any movie ever made,” which is pushing it. Blazing Saddles is one of the all-time greats, but you could accuse Brooks of getting a little too high on his own supply in this case.
