“This bill is straightforward,” Sen. Collins said during the markup of the bill.
Sen. Collins on July 21 signed on as the lead original cosponsor of S. 5046, which is sponsored by U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA).
The legislation would prevent the department from transferring the Offices of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, Postsecondary Education, Elementary and Secondary Education, and Indian Education to any other federal agency.
“These transfers are misaligned with their program purposes,” said Sen. Collins.
“It’s primarily focused on the student’s education needs, not on their healthcare needs.”
