CNA Financial reports rising profit on investment gainsCNA Financial notched a 7% increase in net income for the second quarter, with its adjusted profit falling, while its top executive pointed to growth in new business. Net income rose to $321 million, up from $299 million the same quarter last year, while core income – which excludes the effect of investment – declined to $324 million, down 3%. Net investment income rose to $701 million, up 6% compared to the prior year quarter. CNA’s property/casualty segment delivered core income of $426 million in the second quarter, down 4.9%. This included 2.3 points, or $60 million, of catastrophe loss impact, compared to 2.4 points in the prior year quarter.
