A metal detectorist uncovered 52,503 Roman coins in one buried pot, and the eerie arrangement hinted at a far stranger purpose. The Frome Hoard contains 52,503 Roman coins, packed into a ceramic vessel that was buried in a field near Frome in Somerset. Frome Museum says 44,245 could be identified, with the remainder classified as illegible. Frome Museum says there is no evidence of a substantial Roman community at Frome, although villas existed in the surrounding area. Roman coins from the Frome Hoard are arranged in museum display cases alongside enlarged photographs and labels.
