A man who accumulated £2,231.55 in unpaid fares on the Elizabeth line was apprehended by Transport for London fraud investigators at Whitechapel station after exploiting the network for over a year using a frozen bank card. Despite the painstaking operation required to track him down, the fare dodger ultimately walked away with a court penalty of just £240. The investigators ordered the man aside and confiscated his card, which a scan confirmed was the one under investigation. Nationally, the Rail Delivery Group puts annual losses from fraud and ticketless travel at between £350 million and £400 million. Last month, the Department for Transport announced a £33.4 million programme to install taller barriers at stations across England.
