Graduating University of Brighton student Rebecca Cormack has developed a project that challenges rape culture, the male gaze and the objectification of women—a project she says proves "design can be about much more than creating beautiful objects." Her final-year project uses design as a tool for activism, raising conversations around consent, misogyny and the factors that contribute to rape culture, with wearable pieces and installation art donating 50 per cent of jewellery sale profits to Rape Crisis. Ms Cormack, a mature student, was diagnosed with breast cancer just one week before beginning her BA (Hons) in 3D Design and Craft. She continued her studies while undergoing cancer treatment, attending regular radiotherapy appointments throughout her first year and returning to university workshops in between sessions. She plans to use the prize money and gifted silver to further develop her collection and continue creating projects that use design to inspire change.
