Steps are being taken to protect students from the searing Texas heat.
Texas Schools Adopt Mandatory Wet-Bulb Heat Safety Standard for Fall AthleticsAs Texas student-athletes return to practice fields this fall, high school athletic programs across the state are operating under a newly mandated safety protocol designed to prevent heat-related illnesses.
According to KWTX, the newly updated rule requires all member schools to track wet-bulb globe temperatures on a consistent basis and immediately cancel outdoor practices when temperatures reach dangerous levels.
Unlike traditional heat index measurements which primarily combine air temperature and relative humidity, wet-bulb globe temperature offers a broader picture by measuring direct solar radiation, wind speed, humidity, and temperature.
Proactive Adjustments and UIL FindingsMany school districts proactively integrated wet-bulb monitoring into their daily athletic routines two years before the statewide mandate took effect.
