Cairo: An earthquake measuring 5.6 in magnitude struck 38 kilometres north of the Egyptian city of Suez shortly after 3:00 a.m. local time (0000 GMT) on Monday, according to Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics.
The institute said it had not received any reports of casualties or property damage following the quake.
The Egyptian Red Crescent announced that it had activated its emergency response plan in governorates where the tremor was felt.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) measured the earthquake at magnitude 5.4 and said it occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres.
