Updating this rule will remove a major obstacle railroads currently face when trying to operate high speed trains. Existing noise limits for conventional rail services operating at speeds of up to 160mph would remain unchanged. The FRA estimates that the proposed reforms could reduce compliance costs for high-speed rail developers by around 100 million USD over the next 30 years. We’re making it attractive to businesses and investors to partner with USDOT and develop high speed rail here in the U.S. The proposal forms part of a wider programme by the FRA to update long-standing rail regulations, with several rulemaking initiatives underway to modernise standards covering high-speed rail operations, signalling and the introduction of new railway technologies.
