From the western edge of West Duluth to Proctor to Fond du Lac, an area encompassing about 10% of the city’s population, there is not one grocery store. There is a Super One Foods in West Duluth, but the closest affordable option to that is in Hermantown. A buildable lot for sale on Grand Avenue closer to West Duluth could provide a more-accessible option across westernmost Duluth and genuinely could improve our quality of life. It would send a signal to other businesses that there’s a market to be tapped here in western Duluth, which would draw more small businesses, employers, and, realistically, even city investment. Duluth City Hall should be jumping up and clicking its heels at an opportunity to make a move that could spark an economic renaissance in a dormant region.
