CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa has been formally charged with treason and publication of false news likely to cause alarm, in a dramatic escalation of the legal saga surrounding the outspoken activist’s continued detention. Chief Resident Magistrate Austin Banda read out the serious charges against Namiwa in a Lilongwe courtroom just moments ago, confirming the activist now faces some of the most severe accusations available under Malawian law. The court has since taken the significant step of committing Namiwa to the High Court for further proceedings, given the gravity of the charges he now faces. With the case now heading to the High Court, all eyes will be on how the treason charge — one of the most serious offences under Malawian law — plays out, as the country continues to grapple with the political fallout from Namiwa’s remarks and his prolonged detention.
