Spread the wordA coalition of civil society organisations has called on the National Assembly to withdraw a series of controversial bills that poses threats to civic freedoms, democratic participation and constitutional rights in the country. Auwal called on lawmakers to ensure that future legislation affecting civil society organisations, digital rights, media freedom and civic participation complies with the Nigerian Constitution. He said the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and other applicable international human rights standards. She appealed to lawmakers to reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to constitutionalism, accountability, transparency, the rule of law and respect for human rights. Such measures risk facilitating censorship, restricting access to information, discouraging innovation and investment, and encouraging private companies to prioritise political pressure over internationally recognised human rights standards.
