Immigration detentions hit a monthly high in July as the Trump administration continued to focus on raising arrest numbers. Last month, the average hit 1,500 as immigration officers upped arrests at airports and descended on immigration check-in appointments. The brief decline in detentions between January and April followed the high-profile shooting deaths of two U.S. citizens at the hands of immigration enforcement officers. Renee Nicole Good, 37, was shot during an altercation with federal immigration officers on January 7. After those incidents, Border Patrol Commander-at-Large Gregory Bovino, who had largely been the face of the immigration enforcement efforts, retired.
