The fires, now managed collectively as the Spokane Area Fires, broke out Saturday afternoon: the Old Trails Fire north of Airway Heights, the Autumn Lane Fire near Five Mile Falls, and the Fairview Fire near Mead. Roughly 60,000 people within Spokane city limits were evacuated in total. Separately, officials said they were still assessing the potential for lives lost as damage assessments continue across the burned areas. Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency Saturday, prohibiting most outdoor and agricultural burning, and activated the Washington National Guard. Maj. Gen. Gent Welsh, the Guard's adjutant general, asked residents for patience as officials worked to safely reopen affected areas.
