Voluntary recognition allows an employer to recognize a union without requiring a government-supervised election once a majority of workers has demonstrated support. "A supermajority of eligible Wikimedia Foundation workers in the United States have signed union authorization cards asking the Foundation to voluntarily recognize our union," Wiki Workers United U.S., affiliated with the Communications Workers of America (CWA), said when requesting recognition, arguing that workers had already demonstrated majority support. "Workers have the right to seek union recognition either through voluntary recognition based on signed authorization cards or through an NLRB-conducted secret-ballot election," the National Labor Relations Board explains in its guidance on representation cases.
