The dual nature of the medium, where the text says one thing while the image say another, makes comics ripe for such contradictions in terms. Given her bibliography, it is unsurprising that Heaven is a comic ostensibly about sex work. Nuance in stories about sex work is almost entirely anathema to American comics and any tonal deviance from pitiable tragedy is seen as crass and forbidden, which makes the confounding nature of Heaven something of a novelty. Skelly’s work is often difficult to taxonomize. But Skelly’s comics are also tinged with European flavors as well, from Giulia Sagramola to Milo Manara.
