Pflugerville leaders could soon move to establish new rules governing the city’s use of artificial intelligence and surveillance technology. The City Council is expected to consider a resolution Tuesday directing city staff to develop a policy framework covering the use of AI, surveillance systems, facial recognition technology, and data collection. If approved, city staff would draft an ordinance for council consideration at a later date. Under the proposal, voters could also be asked to decide whether those policies should be added to the City Charter, giving residents the final say on long-term oversight. Supporters say the effort is intended to increase transparency and accountability as cities adopt new technology, while balancing public safety with privacy and civil liberties.
