Hyderabad: Offering ‘help’ at ATMs, secretly swapping debit cards and emptying bank accounts was the modus operandi of an interstate gang that preyed on senior citizens and unsuspecting users across Hyderabad.
Cyberabad Police have now arrested six members of the gang, seized 130 ATM cards, two POS swipe machines and cash, while launching a hunt for the remaining accused.
Gang swapped ATM cards to steal cashDuring the investigation, police found that the accused deliberately waited near isolated ATM centres and primarily targeted elderly people and customers unfamiliar with ATM operations.
The gang would offer to help victims use the ATM, secretly observe their PIN numbers and swap their original ATM cards with similar-looking cards.
They later used the stolen cards to withdraw cash from ATMs and make purchases through POS swipe machines.
