Today is Aug. 3, the deadline for Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear to call a special election to fill Mitch McConnell's Senate seat if it becomes vacant. You might say that McConnell’s death has really taken on a life of its own. But I don't think he's dead. I don't think McConnell has any interest in martyring himself, secretly or otherwise, to protect this version of the Republican Party from a special election. That's the ending he wants, and it’s one I don’t think he deserves.
