Conor Johnstone, formerly of Boots Green Lane, Allostock, set up a fake Cheshire Police email address to help him get his hands on the footage.
The man told staff he was investigating an incident between a man and a woman, who had been to the restaurant four days earlier.
He said he needed the restaurant’s CCTV footage, and provided a description of the people he was interested in.
Police also discovered the woman Johnstone was looking to find on the CCTV was known to him.
Johnstone appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on Monday, August 3, where he was handed a 12-month community order including 260 hours supervised unpaid work.
