"In recent years, I have done a lot of deep water videos and have even seen smallmouth bass and perch in water over 60 feet deep and a temperature of 46 degrees. I have not seen walleyes that deep; although in late summer/early fall, I routinely catch and see largemouth bass in water as deep as 45-50 feet," Carlson said. "Those are the areas they like, getting into deep water because of the huge swing in surface temperature," Massure said. For that purpose, researchers deploy vertical gill nets and now even sonar devices for their deep water research.
