The honour was decided upon by Tenby Town Council in recognition of the group's "outstanding service to our community". An extraordinary meeting of Tenby Town Council in July saw councillors unanimously approve the decision, describing the group as a "cornerstone" of the community. Tenby Sea Cadets were affiliated to the Navy League when they were formed in October 1951. He said: "Tenby Sea Cadets were affiliated to the Navy League beginning 75 years of the Sea Cadet Corps in the harbour. "As we approach the 75th anniversary of the formation of Tenby Sea Cadets, I was immensely proud to learn that Tenby Town Council had voted to bestow the honour of Freedom of the Town on the unit."
