A crofter has spoken after a high proportion of her lambs were wiped out by a deadly parasite. The Burra crofter said the spread of Nematodirosis followed changeable weather conditions over the spring weeks. “I think it was about seven lambs that we lost,” said Mrs Smith, who runs Langsoond Yarn from her holding at Brake. Although adult sheep are better able to resist infection, young lambs can quickly become dehydrated and unable to absorb their food. Nematodirosis typically kills young lambs aged from six to 12 weeks, although adult ewes carry natural immunity and do not show clinical signs.
